IDP is a self-paced program that allows adults over the age of 23 to pursue a bachelor's degree at Trinity. All majors are available to IDP students to study, and they may either enroll full- or part-time. IDP students are allowed to apply for financial aid, and must submit an application and get accepted into the program, mirroring the traditional student admission process. Some IDP students are veterans or international students, with many from the Hartford area.

The Individualized Degree Program was transformed from the Alternate Degree Program in 1973. While the Alternate Degree Program focused on obtaining a bachelor's degree through academic proficiency rather than course and credit completion, the IDP was a way for “non-traditional” undergraduates to get their bachelor's degrees and find a community at Trinity while doing it.
