One of the College's earliest organizations, the Symposiac existed in the 1870s. While very little remains known about the group, it can be assumed that it was one of the College's literary societies, as symposiac means a gathering of philosophers at a banquet, suggesting the group's purpose. | The Symposiac, a student organization, possibly a secret or literary society, which existed in 1873; it is listed in the first //[[ivy|Ivy]]// under "Miscellaneous Organizations" and its members are called "Wranglers." The July 1873 //[[tablet|Trinity Tablet]]//, however, does not mention it at all, and it disappears from subsequent //Ivys//. |

Several [[societies|societies]] have existed on the College's campus, both secret and literary. The Symposiac seems to have been formed as a rival to other early literary societies, or to explore specific literary interests. While there were a few "main" societies, many were formed to encourage rivalry and competition, or to increase the exclusivity of such clubs. | "Symposiac" refers to a symposium, or social gathering at which there is an interchange of ideas, which can define many of the social organizations that existed during Trinity's early days. Some of these societies were organized as anti- or rival existing societies, for socializing and entertainment. |

During their most popular days, such groups met weekly to debate and housed large libraries within the College. | |
