University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad

Founded in 1998, Trinity in Trinidad was Trinity College's immersive study-away program for exploring Caribbean Civilization. The hybrid program allowed students to attend classes taught by Trinity faculty as well as to enroll in the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, to study alongside their West Indian peers.

The interdisciplinary nature of the program allowed students with a variety of interests to participate in the program, taking classes that included engineering, Caribbean society, culture, economy, politics, and arts and music. Students had the opportunity to work closely with local cultural and political leaders, as well as scientists, engineers, and filmmakers through internships, independent studies, and community service. Students also participated in Trinidad's famous festivals, including Ramleela in the fall and Carnival in the spring. Notable alumna and singer Rachel Platten '03 studied abroad through Trinity in Trinidad and took music lessons while there.

The close partnership between Trinity and UWI through Trinity in Trinidad resulted in the building of the “UWI-Trinity House” on UWI's campus. The building served as a physical representation of the two institutions' academic relationship and collaboration. The Watkinson Library's digital archive, “Trinity in Trinidad” has videos from lectures associated with the program.

The Trinity in Trinidad program was suspended in 2020.
