The Cave
The Cave, a dining location on campus, is located in the basement of Mather Hall. There is food available to order and have prepared there, as well as a convenience store-esque space where students can buy snacks, fresh produce, and beverages. Payments for meals and snacks are both made through credit cards, Bantam Bucks, or meal swipes. It has existed in some form on campus since the late 1940's. It was originally located in the basement of the Hamlin Hall dining hall (this underground location a potential reason for the name).
The Cave remained in the Hamlin Dining Hall until the opening of Mather in the 1960's. The 1959 Trinity College Handbook describes it as a having a “small cafeteria and soda fountain”. A 1957 Tripod edition, while complaining about the food variety and quality, states that though the Cave had originally been a snack bar, it had expanded to more resemble a small dining hall.
A lounge attached to the Cave was added when it was moved to Mather Hall. This attached space serves a place for students to eat and lounge, as well as a community space for events and lecturers.
