The College Union Regatta was one of the earliest intercollegiate boating competitions in the United States, organized by a number of northeastern colleges in 1858. A convention of college boating clubs was held in New Haven, Connecticut on May 26, 1858. Representatives from Yale, Harvard, Trinity, and Dartmouth attended and collectively planned an inaugural annual regatta for August 27 of that same year. However, three days before the competition, George E. Dunham of the Yale team drowned during a practice session and the regatta was cancelled soon after. Trinity College’s rowing club team, known as the Minnehaha Club, did not participate in the College Union Regatta in the years following.
