| The College Union Regatta was one of the country’s earliest intercollegiate boating competitions, organized by a number of northeastern colleges in 1858. A convention of college boating clubs was held in New Haven on May 26, 1858. In attendance were Yale, Harvard, Trinity, and Dartmouth, who collectively planned an inaugural annual regatta for August 27 of that same year. However, three days before the competition, George E. Dunham of the Yale team drowned during a practice session, and the regatta was cancelled soon after.
