The Marshal of the College is the person chosen to direct formal events occurring on campus, most notably commencement. Duties of the Marshal can include leading the Alma Mater, reading names of graduates, directing people to their seats, and guiding the students to walk/gather in an organized manner.

Though modern-day marshals are typically professors who have their duties limited to solely directing commencement proceedings, the early Marshal of the College participated in events year round. Marshals were also students, elected while still undergraduates of the college. Their duties included leading processions during funerals and organizing large intercollegiate meetings during the school year.

In both past and modern times, the Marshal for that year's commencement ceremony has been listed alongside their Assistant Marshals in the commencement program.
