Marshal of the College
The Marshal of the College is the person chosen to direct formal events occurring on campus, most notably Commencement. This can include leading the alma mater, directing people to their seats, and guiding the students to walk/gather in an organized manner.
Though modern day Marshals are typically Professors that have their duties limited to solely directing Commencement, the early Marshal of the College was used for events year round. These Marshals were also students, elected while still being undergraduates of the school. Their duties included leading processions during funerals and organizing large intercollegiate meetings during the school year.
In both past and modern times, the Marshal for that year's Commencement has been listed alongside their Assistant Marshals in the Commencement Programming.
