Board of Visitors

The Board of Visitors was a governing body that served alongside the Chancellor to oversee the internal functions of the College from 1853 until 1906.

The term “Visitor” with regard to the Board is considered an overseer of an entity. This oversight was a function of the Chancellor, who was also the Bishop of Connecticut for some time, and a board was formed to assist in the College's internal administration. Early members included Bishop Brownell, who served until his death in 1865. Later, Bishop John Williams served as Chairman of the Board of Visitors.

The members of the Board of Visitors primarily consisted of former Chancellors, who had lifetime appointments, but also included bishops from neighboring dioceses within the Episcopal Church. Eventually, these leaders died without replacement and the Board of Visitors no longer convened.
