Fred Pfeil Community Project (The Fred)
“The Fred” is a dormitory located in the Summit Suites East building, named in 2006 after Trinity English and Film Studies professor Fred Pfeil (pronounced “file”) following his untimely death to due to cancer in 2005. Pfeil's “pursuit of open-mindedness and intellectualism” was well-known, which is why students supported naming this project after him.
The building is the tallest of the Summit Suites and houses 60 students, with both quads and singles. There is an application and interview process to be accepted to live in The Fred, with applications open to rising sophomores.
The Fred's stated goal is to provide an inclusive space open to the whole campus. To achieve this goal, Fred members host events every Friday night that are open to the whole student body. Events include board game nights, movie screenings, fashion shows, ping pong tournaments, and baking. The Fred itself is run by students, and has multiple positions and committees internally that are filled by Fred members.
Unlike other dorms, Summit East has no Residential Advisor. The dorm is run by those who live in it, with a few selected members working on day-to-day operations. Positions include community facilitator, event coordinator, advertising, and alumni liaison, to name a few. The dorm is also led by the Fred Constitution, which is used to aid the decisions of student leaders and to provide guidance for electing officers, conducting weekly meetings, and hosting activities and events.
