House of Peace
The House of Peace is a student-run organization established in 2009 which aims to promote an understanding of life in the Middle East through the creation of events inspired by Middle Eastern culture. An extension of a campus movement to support cultural diversity and intermingling through cultural houses, the House of Peace hosts traditionally Middle Eastern activities and events which encourage students to explore Middle Eastern politics, history, food, music, dance, religions, and languages. Located at 115 Allen Place (next to Hillel House and behind Campus Safety and Umoja House), the House of Peace has hosted social events throughout the years which have included open mics and slam poetry, a hookah lounge open on weekends, belly dancing performances, collaborative events with the other cultural houses on campus, and an annual Middle Eastern Festival. Much of the House of Peace’s work has also been focused on the Middle Eastern communities located in the Hartford area–in 2009 and 2010, the House of Peace created a tutoring program in collaboration with the Somali Bantu Community Development Center of Connecticut, Inc. (SBCDC); in 2014, the group collaborated with several other campus cultural groups to host a student discussion on immigration law; and in 2015 the group hosted Palestinian peace activist Ali Abu Awwad to talk about her experience being involved in the first Palestinian Intifada in 1987.
